Unboxing/Packaging

ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti O11G OC comes in a beautiful box. You can notice an Nvidia branded Geforce RTX logo at first glance on the front side of the box, which is accompanied with ROG Strix label on the top left. It is ASUS Aura Sync compatible, which means you can configure the lighting effects with your other ASUS Aura sync compatible hardware. You can also notice that it sports 11GB GDDR6 memory. RTX 2080 Ti is also equiped with DirectX 12 as well as Nvidia’s Ansel & Ray tracing technology.

The back side of the box is very detailed and contains all of the information and features of the GPU itself which includes MaxContact Technology, Auto-Extreme technology, Aura Sync Compatibility, Axial-Tech Fans, Dual Bios Switch, and GPU Tweak II.

Back side of the box contains detailed information of all the features of the GPU itself which includes MaxContact Technology, Dual Bios Switch, Auto-Extreme Technology,
Axial-Tech Fans, Aura Sync Compatibility, and GPU Tweak II.

The back side of the box also depicts information related to all of the inputs/outputs of the GPU which includes:

  • 2x DisplayPort
  • 2x HDMI
  • 1x Type-C (For VR)

The Backside of the box also displays that ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti O11G OC comes with 3 years of warranty stamp. It is always good to have a long term support from the manufacturing brands.

The rest of the side of the outer box isn’t much interesting. Let’s open the box and take a look at the ASUS RTX 2080 Ti.

After unboxing We get to look at a flip box with ASUS Branding written on it. Flipping open the enclosure, you can look at the driver CD and some documentation related to setup.

On the bottom of the accessories, the Behemoth of a GPU is waiting for us to unpack and put it into testing.

Closer Look

At first glance, we can see ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti O11G OC in all glory and notice that it boasts three fan design. ASUS has revamped fans for GPU’s and its looking awesome. The GPU shroud is made out of Industrial grade plastic, which feels premium to look and feel. We will see if any of the changes to fans have made any difference regarding thermal performance.

“Geforce RTX” is embedded on the top side of the graphics card along with the STRIX branding and Republic of gamers logo, Which is quite nice to look at.

On the ride end side of the ASUS STRIX RTX 2080 Ti, you can see heat sink is visible and made with aluminum and has 5 copper pipes, which should be enough to keep the RTX 2080 ti a cool GPU (pun intended). You can also see that there are fan and Aura header available for you to attach and synchronize the speed of those fans with the GPU itself.

Looking at the backside of the ASUS RTX STRIX 2080 Ti, you can see fancy backplate with Mayan style engraving and ROG logo embedded. ROG Logo is accompanied with RGB lighting inside it.

The GPU’s front shroud also incorporates a lot of led lighting making it perfect for the people who are looking for excellent aesthetics in their GPUs.

The I/O side of the Strix RTX 2080 is amazing because it is painted black too. I totally miss this feature in my own GTX 1060 Strix. Previous gen Strix GPUs had silver I/O plate which was a partial deal breaker for all of the stealthy look. It’s good to see Asus took notes and painted the I/O plate black in the new gen.

The cooler is fairly beefy in comparison with the old gen. The cooler is wider and thicker now. We expect wonderful thermal performance from this beast.

On the top right side we can also see that it requires 2x 8 Pin power connectors.

ASUS has also included a Dual Bios switch right on the top of the GPU. It has two modes P & Q. P mode simply means Performance Mode and Q mode means Quiet Mode. You can switch the Bios anytime to take full advantage of GPU.

Overclocking/Power

ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti O11G OC comes with factory overclocked configuration. In Gaming mode, GPU is set to 1350Mhz base clock and 1660Mhz boost clock, which is just same as Nividia’s reference model’s base clock. While in OC mode, the base clock is also set on 1350Mhz but the boost clock is adjusted on 1665Mhz. Testing with factory settings, card showed core clock hitting 1940Mhz using Nividia’s latest turbo boost 3.0. While on average it was stable around 1900Mhz.

Overclocking the RTX series GPUs is challenging task. I started with increasing the power limit to 125% and temperature to 85 degrees to be on safe side. I managed to pull +50Mhz on the core clock and +400Mhz on the memory. Going any further resulted in artifacts. To be honest, it never crashed while having artifacts. However I am going to say that these new GPU’s are not good overclockers.

Performance/Benchmarks

Here, I am going to present how good RTX series GPUs are performing in real time gaming performance and synthetic benchmarks. Spoiler Alert, RTX series surely showed great results compared to previous generation’s pascal based graphics cards but I am not excited about the ray tracing results. I understand that this is only the first generation of Ray tracing on GPU’s. I am looking forward to future releases from both Nvidia & AMD to pull some great results on Ray tracing end.

Test System/Methodology:

  • All games and cards were tested with the drivers listed above, and no performance results were recycled between test systems. Only this exact system with exactly the same configuration was used.
  • All games are set to their highest quality setting unless indicated otherwise.
  • AA and AF are applied via in-game settings, not via the driver’s control panel.

Here are the list of games and benchmarks, we are going to use to produce test results for ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti O11G OC.

Games: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Far Cry 5, Rise of The Tomb Raider, Shadow of The Tomb Raider, Shadow of War, Battlefield V

Software: 3DMark Time Spy, Unigine Superposition

Results:

The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 OC shined bright in performance but showed drastic results to its sole purpose which was the Raytracing abilities of the GPU.

The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti O11G OC performed very well in all games and synthetic benchmarks. But I was devastated to see the results of Ray tracing. When we turned on RTX features in the Battlefield V, we saw a massive drop in FPS. We went from 137 fps to 68 fps by just turning on and off the RTX DLSS features. I am sure Nvidia is going to improve the performance over time. But as of now, I am not happy with the results. Nvidia really needs to fix their drivers or I should say optimize games enough to satisfy us with the integrity of the RTX features. Till now, Raytracing feels like a gimp. In real time it doesn’t exhibit much beautiful results as everyone may have understood. But I am sure it will be fixed sometime in future.

Here are the test results for the games & softwares, I have mentioned above.

Conclusion

The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti O11G OC did what its supposed to do. It performed very well during our testing and benchmarking. RTX 2080 Ti is one of the best flagship GPU out there. STRIX RTX 2080 ti is slightly faster than the Nvidia’s RTX 2080 Ti Founder’s Edition, but the difference is not really exciting. In gaming scenarios, nobody will feel any noticeable difference between two.

ASUS has put together the GPU in modern fashion by using a beefy cooler & triple fan design. ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2080 Ti O11G OC also moderately factory over-clocked. The GPU also embodies RGB lighting on the front and backplate and headers to connect additional RGB LEDs compatible with Aura Sync. Its best performing GPU with extremely fine temperatures between 60-72.

If you already have other ASUS gear and wants to connect everything ll together with ASUS Aura sync software, I am sure it will be best choice for you. In the end, ASUS ROG STRIX 2080 Ti O11G OC is one Beast GPU as it performed great in all of our benchmarks and games. It is recommended choice, specially when you have other ASUS compatible devices.
