Devotion is a horror game that was released a few days ago, and it is an overall good game. However, due to the insult of the Chinese president Xi Jinping the game got review bombed on Steam by Chinese players.
The insult was found on a piece of paper that wrote “Xi Jinping”, “Winnie the Pooh” and “Moron”. The Chinese players didn’t take that lightly as they not only negative reviewed Devotion but also review bombed Detention, another horror game from RedCandleGames. As of now, Devotion has a total of 13,000 reviews, and 9,000 of them are negative.
The reference of Winnie the Pooh starts from 2017 where people started comparing Xi Jinping to Winnie the Pooh. This meme lead to the ban of Winnie the Pooh movie in 2017. Also, the game has writings where it calls the people of China morons.
However, RedCandleGames came out with an apology on their Steam page.
Stating the following:
The offensive writings have been removed from the game, but people still aren’t satisfied even though they apologized and removed the content from their game. This was a bad mistake from the developers, and this might lead to future failures.
In my opinion, a game should be politically neutral so it will be enjoyable for players around the globe without being offensive.
