The PC has long been considered the ultimate gaming platform, because – despite the popularity of consoles like PlayStation and Xbox – the most powerful graphics cards are only available for PC.

But a new leak suggests that the forthcoming PlayStation 5 could knock PC gaming off its perch.

The rumour comes from  Komachi , a well-known leaker, who posted supposed details of the graphics processor that will be inside the PlayStation 5 on her Twitter account.

According to the leak, the GPU of the PlayStation 5 could run at an insane 2GHz.

That equates to a compute speed of 9.2 teraflops, according to Twitter user Is A Parrot , which is an order of magnitude more powerful than any other video console that has been released to date.

It’s also faster than some of the mainstream graphics cards that users buy to power their gaming PCs – including AMD’s Radeon RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT.

It’s not quite as fast as Nvidia’s RTX 2080 graphics card, which is capable of hitting 10.1 teraflops, but it is on a par with its RTX 2070 card.

How this affects the PC gaming industry will depend a lot on price.

Sony hasn’t revealed its pricing strategy for the PlayStation 5 yet, though there are some wild rumours that it could be sold for over £850 .

The company is more likely to price the PS5 roughly in line with the previous generation PS4, which went on sale at £349 back in 2013.

By comparison, Nvidia’s website lists the RTX 2080 for £729, while the RTX 2070 goes for £549 – and that’s on top of the computer itself, pushing the overall cost of a gaming PC into the thousands.

Console gaming is already growing at triple the rate of PC gaming, according to the latest Global Games Market Report from market forecast firm Newzoo.

With Sony’s PlayStation 5 expected to offer PC-level graphics at a significantly lower price, this trend is only set to continue.

Sony is expected to unveil its PS5 in early 2020, with the latest rumour from an anonymous user on 4chansuggesting the launch date will be 12 February .
