What is Battle Royale?
Battle Royale, short for BR is a free-for-all deathmatch with the intention to be the last man alive, which got popular in Early 2017 short after the release of Player Unknown’s Battle Grounds, short for PUBG.
Here are some of the qualities that a Battle Royale game delivers:
Giant Maps :
One of the hallmark features of any Battle Royale game is a large scale map that features a great environment, set of buildings, big battle-fields, and many explorable structures. The giant map helps in Battle Royale games because of the hefty player count in one game. Almost every Battle Royale till date has a Giant map.
Start with nothing :
With the intention of being the last man alive, you spawn on an island with very minimal equipment, you have to search for weapons, gear or armor. You have to find the equipment over the island or simply eliminate a player to get all of his equipment.
Chests and special boxes :
There are randomly spawned crates or chests across the island which contain high-tier weapons, gears, ammo, or any useful supply.
Last Man Standing :
Every Battle Royale game has the same purpose. To be the last man standing. The games typically feature a 1vs99 mode (Solo), 2vs98 mode (Duos), or 4vs96(Squads). You or your team has to be the last man alive to win the game.
Closing Storm :
Every Battle Royale game delivers a large storm or a player damage barrier. Which is a large circle which forces the other players to be closer to each other. Fast placed Battle Royale games such as Fortnite or Black Ops 4 Blackout have the damage barrier closing faster than other slow based Battle Royales.
Unique Features :
Every other Battle Royale game delivers a unique playstyle to set itself apart from others. Such as Player Unknown’s Battle Grounds short for PUBG, delivers a realistic gameplay while fortnite has Structure building mechanism.
Top 5 Battle Royale Games of 2018
Enough of the jibber-jabber, below are the top 5 Battle Royale games of 2018 that hold the most value currently in the battle royale frenzy. This list is based on descending order from 5th to the 1st. Let’s dive in!
5. H1Z1 (King of the Hill) :
Coming up on the number 5 is H1Z1 (KOTH). This game recently went from paid game to a free-to-play game. The reason I have put H1Z1 down to number 5 is that because it’s really hard for a new player to get into the game. It has a deep learning curve, different mechanics than other Battle Royale game. Which makes it really hard for a new player to learn the game.
In the start of a new match in the H1Z1 match, 150 players parachute into a relatively small map and a really fast shrinking map. The last moments of the match are generally filled with a lot of action and chaos. Which I feel, adds more fun into the game.
But in the era of Battle Royale games like PUBG or fortnite, H1Z1 doesn’t find its place in the top played Battle Royale game. Just because of its sturdy mechanics and many new players can’t find their place in the game because of the hard mechanics of the game.
4. Ring of Elysium :
Ring of Elysium is a fairly new and recent Battle Royale game released on Steam on September 19, 2018. and getting fairly popular because it is a great free to play alternative to Player Unknown’s Battle Ground.
Various Abilities :
There are various character abilities in Ring of Elysium which a player can select, such as hand-gliding, snowboarding, or mountaineering. And they are much more than just abilities, this creates many play-styles which are only limited by a player’s mind. These abilities can mean the difference between life and death.
Rescue Helicopter :
Instead of being the last man standing, a helicopter comes in the end, which players have to get up to, to win the game. This adds another level of strategy.
Start with some gear occupied :
Unlike PUBG, fortnite, or many other Battle Royale games, you start with a backpack and a gun so you don’t have to waste time looking for weapons instead of fighting a guy who glided next to you.
3. Player Unknown’s Battle Grounds (PUBG) :
I know that I have talked a lot about PUBG in this top 5 list and I’m sure you are wondering why I have put down PUBG to number 3rd. Because of Bluehole corp. (creator of PUBG) literally doesn’t care about the player base and what the players want. PUBG was released in early 2017 with many bugs and issues, and most of them aren’t fixed yet. Like de-sync issues, performance issues, many bugs, cheaters, bad net code, fps drops, and many more issues.
And recently Bluehole Org. introduced a region lock. Due to the region lock, I always get placed in 300 ms servers for some reason while I get 80 ms ping on SEA servers, and the game is literally unplayable due to that.
But there’s a good side of PUBG too… If you want to play a realistic Battle Royale with friends, PUBG for sure will give u a lot of good times and moments. It has a non-toxic community because there is no chat feature in the feature other than the voice chat, which you can also mute. The game requires good teamwork and strategy, you can’t just run around the map expecting to win. Realistic shooting mechanics, recoil control and bullet drop. Three maps included with the game, which is one of the best features of PUBG. There is an 8×8 map Erangel and its desert counter map Miramar, and they recently introduced a 4×4 new map Sanhok for close range quarter fights and faster gameplay overall.
2. Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Blackout (Battle Royale) :
Activision recently published a new Call of Duty game, Black Ops 4, which contains battle royale in the style of Fortnite and PUBG. The Battle Royale mode of Call of Duty Black Ops 4 is known as Blackout. Blackout features the largest map ever made in Call of Duty, approximately 1500 times larger than the original map Nuketown. There are even zombies included in the game, they are not all over the map, they only spawn in a few locations, which is great in my opinion. The HUD is really great and well created. You can heal while you are moving, which is good since the game is really fast paced. The grappling hook is really useful while you are moving throughout the map and also the game runs great.
1. Fortnite Battle Royale :
Coming up on number one is the Fortnite Battle Royale. The most popular Battle Royale till yet. The original Fortnite saves the world announced in 2011 at Spike video game Awards. Fortnite Battle Royale mode was released as free to play on September 26, 2017. I have put down fortnite on number one just because of the amazing developers of the game. The most surprising thing in Fortnite Battle Royale is that there are very less to no cheaters in the game, I have never faced a cheater in this game and that’s really impressive for a free-to-play game.
Fortnite is available on all gaming platforms, from mobile to pc to consoles, and there’s crossplay included within platforms. Fortnite can even run if you have a low-end pc, and its free, which is why it’s popular.
The building mechanics are really amazing, new modes introducing every once in a while, low ping servers for where-ever you live. Once you get into the game, it gets really addictive. There’s a playground mode where you can practically build mechanics, play duels against your friends and do almost whatever your imagination leads you to.
Overall, I feel like Fortnite is the best Battle Royale game made till yet. And that’s it for the top 5 best battle royale games as of 2018 as per my opinion, and I hope you liked the top 5 list.
