Toshiba will be introducing their first SSD that will be using 96-layer 3D NAND, the drive which will be using this NAND is the Toshiba XG6 which is an update to their XG5 NVMe SSDs for OEMs, the XG5 never released in the market for the public, but hopefully, this one will.

The controller that the Toshiba XG6 is the Toshiba TC58NCP090GSD which is the exact same controller that was used for the XG5. It means that the improvements are due to the new 96-layer NAND flash along with some firmware optimizations. The toggle NAND 3.0 interface is supported by the new 96-layer 3D TLC at around 667-800MT/s speeds which when compared to the 400-533MT/s speeds that were used by the earlier 3D NAND from Toshiba is quite an upgrade. This allows the data to move more quickly between the controller and the NAND. Although Toshiba didn’t disclose the exact speed that is used on the XG6.

 

 

The 64-layer BiCS3 TLC has longer read and program times than the 96-layer NAND, which also means that the faster interface will not be wasted. There is no extra overhead to manage small IO sizes and the NAND page size hasn’t increased when compared to the XG5.

Toshiba plans to use the XG6 Series to push their other products to 96-layer NAND technology. The drive is an M.2 2280 single-sided form factor PCIe 3.0 x4 and is the NVMe revision 1.3a protocol. Toshiba is claiming that this drive is aimed to hit the sweet spot between power consumption and performance. This drive reaches a maximum of 4.7W on the power draw and idles at 3mW while it still reaches 3180MB/s read and 2960MB/s write speeds and the random read speeds are up to 355,000 IOPS, with random write speeds of up to 365,000 IOPS. This is really impressive and also will be displayed at FMS this year.

The Toshiba XG6 is currently sampling to OEMs and will be available in notebook computers soon replacing the XG5. On the retail side, Toshiba never released a drive based on it but hopefully, they base a retail version in order to replace the OCZ RD400, which was based on the XG3 SSD.
